Art Glass Sculptures

Vandalia Glassworks has a handful of creative artists offering their masterpieces of glass art sculpture.

The artisan’s pieces are created out of molten glass and color referred to as frit or solid rod. The artisan will gather molten glass onto a pipe, color the glass and begin to shape it with a variety of tools.

The tools used are tweezers, picks, jacks, wood padels and a steel table – the marver.  The piece will be pulled and twisted and stretched in a variety of ways to shape the piece.  It will also be shaped using a damp newspaper pad or a wood padel.

Often times in sculpting certain areas of the piece will be heated with a propane torch allowing the artist to shape just certain areas.

Glass Art By Local Artists

Artisans create stunning pieces from fish to trees to birds to abstract art.  Each piece is unique in color shape and size and is created by skilled glass artists.  Glass art figurines can take a whole day to complete.

Often times the artist will make pieces and store them in an oven called a garage.  After all of the pieces have been completed they are then assembled onto the final piece creating a truly one of a kind true work of art.

History of Glassblowing

Glass has been used by cultures as far back as the ancient Egyptians. What we take for granted today was regarded as one of the most luxurious forms of craftsmanship in the past. From small bits of jewelry to beautifully designed vessels, it’s amazing to think that even back then, artisans were capable of making such intricate works.

As time went on, the techniques they used continued to be refined and perfected into what artists use today. This evolution leads us to the modern art of glassblowing – a craft that we are proud to be able to share with you.
